When doing the dishes by hand, use only a pencil-sized stream of water. Fill one basin with soapy water for washing, and rinse. Use the leftover to run the disposal. And if you use a dishwasher, fill it to the max before running it: don't bother with the prewash setting. Then leave the door open to air dry your dishes.
