It seems like a no-brainer, but how many times have you thrown away drowned food floating in your cooler? Pre-chill everything beforehand. Fill the cooler with ice and let it sit for an hour. And make sure your food and drinks are cold before they're packed. A full cooler will stay cold longer, and always stash it in a shaded location.
